Take in the views the radiant autumn trees, as you travel the classic New England two-lane roads that wind through smaller coastal towns. Check out these ideas to make the best of your Fall trip in the Southern Maine area, from Camden to Kittery.
Take a Coastal Driving Tour
Route 1 from Brunswick to Boothbay Harbor offers some of the most spectacular foliage views along Maine’s coast. There are multiple stops you can take, some featured in one of our previous blog posts that highlights the best stops from Portland to Camden. In addition to fabulous restaurants and historic lighthouses, there are plenty of activities that will make this trip more than just a leisurely drive. With the ocean on one side and the beautiful fall colors on the other, there’s no way making the drive along this road wouldn’t be worth it.
Visit Maine’s Oceanfront State Parks
Check out the North Loop Trail at Wolfe’s Neck State Park in Freeport for an exceptionally bright display of foliage that generally peaks around mid-October. In addition, the park trails along the outskirts of Ferry Beach State Park in Saco offer a view of the most uncommon trees and sensational colors that the season has to offer. Both of these locations offer outstanding opportunities for bird watching, so don’t forget to pack your binoculars!
Enjoy the Festivities at Fall Fairs
We highlighted Maine’s best fall fairs and festivals in our last blog post and are mentioning them again as a must do this season. Not only does Maine offer some of the more classic country fairs, but the locations of these fairs are so rural that the ride there is bound to be a visual spectacle for anyone searching for fall foliage.
Reach the Summit for the Ultimate View
Maine is known for its extensive ranges and peaks. When visiting the Camden area, be sure to take a hike up Mount Battie and the other summits included within the Camden Hills for a gorgeous view of midcoast Maine, the ocean, and fall foliage all in one place.
