The Must See Art Exhibits in Maine: Winter 2017

Maine Art Museums While Maine is known for its stunning natural beauty, the possibilities of endless outdoor activities (all throughout the year), its burgeoning farm to table food scene, and even the high demand microbrews, Maine’s art scene tends to get over-looked. From Ogunquit all the way up to Camden, there are classic art museums and can’t miss contemporary galleries featuring local artists as well as globally renowned ones. Below we mention some of our favorite museums as well as the upcoming exhibits that will be featured this season.

Portland Museum of Art
Located in heart of downtown Portland, the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) is home to a multitude of iconic collections that feature Claude Monet to Andy Warhol and is one of the most acclaimed museums in all of New England. Here is what’s coming up:

  • February 3rd – June 4th – “The Mistress and the Muse”, selections from the Isabelle and Scott Black Collection.
  • February 3rd – May 29th – “Artists Choice”, photographs from the Judy Glickman Lauder Collection.

The PMA always has events, openings, and special film showings, so don’t forget to check out the Events page to see what’s going on when you’re in town.

Farnsworth Art Museum
Just down the road from the Camden Harbour Inn, the Farnsworth Art Museum is best known for offering a comprehensive collection of American art especially related to Maine-life and well as housing the Wyeth Center. The Wyeth Center is dedicated to the art and history of the three generations of the Wyeth family. The following exhibitions are coming up:

Bowdoin College Museum of Art
Located on Brunswick’s beautiful and historic campus, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art recently expanded their walls to hold their ever-growing collections. Below are some of the exciting new exhibitions on display:

I cannot say enough about our experience here. My boyfriend and I purchased the Christmas package and spent Christmas Eve and Christmas night here, including accommodations, daily breakfast, and a 5 course dinner Christmas night (5-star quality food and service). It was truly one of the best meals we’ve had."
